Al Pacino, Robert De Niro set to reunite for 'Heat' screening

Two decades after Al Pacino and Robert De Niro first shared the screen in Heat, the acting heavyweights are set to reunite for a presentation of the newly restored neo-noir and a post-show discussion.

Pacino and De Niro will be joined by Heat writer-director Michael Mann and other (unspecified) cast and crew members for the event, which is being presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences next month. The restoration will be screened in 4K DCP, and filmmaker Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception) will moderate the Q&A.

Originally released in 1995, Heat centers on the tense game of cat and mouse between an unflappable professional thief (De Niro) and a dogged LAPD detective (Pacino). In addition to a fateful Pacino-De Niro showdown, the film is known for its expertly choreographed heist scenes. Word came earlier this year that Mann is developing a prequel novel.

The Heat event will be held Sept. 7 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Check the academy website for details.
