Miss Peregrine's movie featurette highlights strong female characters

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is shaping up to be a whimsical return to form for director Tim Burton, thanks in part to its large cast of uniquely-drawn female characters.

Based on the Ransom Riggs novel of the same name, the film follows a 16-year-old boy, Jake (Asa Butterfield), who fights alongside the headmistress (Eva Green) of a shelter for children with special powers to save the fantastical youngsters from an impending threat, and a new featurette released by Fox shows off the film’s diverse assortment of butt-kicking women.

“There are a lot of powerful female characters in the movie,” Ella Purnell, who plays a weather-controlling teenager in the film, says in the clip. “They don’t take any crap.”

Speaking on her character, who wields a large crossbow in defense of the children she’s vowed to protect, Green adds: “Miss Peregrine, she’s kind of a warrior. She will do absolutely anything for her children,” while calling the film’s cast of women, which also includes Judi Dench, Kim Dickens, and Allison Janney, an “eccentric, fearless” bunch.
