VMAs 2016: Beyonce wins female video of the year

Beyoncé Knowles’ nabbed a major award at the VMAs on Sunday when she won the Best Female Video for “Hold Up,” off this year’s Lemonade.

Accepting her VMA statuette from the Final Five gymnastics team, Bey told the crowd, “I’d like to thank Jonas Akerlund for directing such an incredible video I’d like to thank everyone at MTV for honoring this song. Thank you to my fans. I love y’all. You inspire me so much. Have a beautiful night.”

The music video for “Hold Up” premiered as part of the hour-long visual album that aired on HBO ahead of Lemonade‘s release, and features Beyoncé shattering car windows with a baseball bat. The track combines interpolations of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Maps,” and was produced by Knowles, Diplo, and Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig.

She received the award after a stellar performance during the broadcast, where she performed “Hold Up,” among other songs from Lemonade.

Heading into Sunday’s ceremony at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, Knowles led the overall nomination count with 11 total nods between the videos for “Formation” and “Hold Up.” She is currently gearing up for the second North American leg of her Formation World Tour, which kicks off Sept. 7 at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

“Hold Up” won the award over other videos for chart-topping singles by prominent female artists, including Sia’s “Cheap Thrills,” Ariana Grande’s “Into You,” Adele’s “Hello,” and Rihanna’s “Work.”
