Gene Wilder dead: Stars pay tribute

After news broke Monday that Gene Wilder had died at the age of 83, countless celebrities, colleagues, and fans took to social media to pay tribute to the beloved comedian.

Wilder, whose legendary comedy resume includes The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, died Sunday from complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Not only did the Oscar-nominated actor headline some of the funniest films of the 1970s, but Wilder was also known for his longtime partnership with Mel Brooks and his commitment to cancer activism. In 1989, his beloved wife Gilda Radner died of ovarian cancer, and he himself was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 1999. Soon after Radner’s death, Wilder co-founded Gilda’s Club, a resource network for cancer patients and their families.

Stars like Stephen Fry, Rob Lowe, and — of course — Brooks took to Twitter to share their memories of the late comedian and offer their condolences to his family.
