For EW’s Fall Music Preview, Norah Jones revealed the grim inspirations behind some of the songs on her new album, Day Breaks, out next month. There’s a lot going on—race relations, terrorism, people going nuts and shooting each other,” she said. “I’ve been inspired a lot by social events that have been going on. The last couple of years have been a really unsettling time.”

No song on the record drives that point home more than “Flipside,” which features an explicit reference to gun violence (“Put the guns away or we’re all gonna lose,” Jones sings) and now has a accompanying lyric video that you can watch below.

The nine-time Grammy winner says one news story in particular inspired the song, but she won’t reveal which one. “[The song] ended up being more broad, it kind of covers a lot of different things,” she says. “I don’t want to get too detailed about it, but it happens so often. I don’t want somebody to change what they’re thinking of. I mean, its pretty clear.”
