Emmys 2016: Julia Louis-Dreyfus wins best actress in a comedy

Julia Louis-Dreyfus might have lost the White House, but she’s Commander-in-Chief of the 68th annual Emmy Awards. The Veep star won her fifth consecutive trophy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her turn as Selina Meyer in the hit HBO series. She is the all-time leader of wins in the category.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to personally apologize for the current political climate,” the 55-year-old said during Sunday night’s ceremony in Los Angeles. “Our show started as a political satire, but it now feels like a sobering documentary.”

She went on to thank her father, who died Friday. “I’m so glad he liked Veep because his opinion was the one that really mattered,” she said through tears.

Louis-Dreyfus’ Selina was a hilariously poor POTUS during her first few months in office after taking over for her resigned predecessor. Her narcissism (excessive) and her ability to govern (insufficient) are unrivaled, so much so that her running mate Tom James becomes more popular than her — and eventually assumes the presidency.

Louis-Dreyfus won out in a packed field that included Ellie Kemper as the upbeat and naïve Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt; Amy Schumer for her acclaimed sketch series Inside Amy Schumer; legend Lily Tomlin for playing one half of Grace and Frankie; breakout Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross; and Laurie Metcalf as an uptight and direct doctor in Getting On.

Five of the former Seinfeld star’s Emmy trophies come from Veep, but she earned her first for The New Adventures of Old Christine 10 years prior. She was previously tied at five awards with Candice Bergen and Mary Tyler Moore.
