Speechless: Minnie Driver, John Ross Bowie call show funny, poignant, bizarre

Minnie Driver and John Ross Bowie head the new comedy Speechless, but their take on the show’s premise is far from what the title suggests.

In a recent video interview with EW, the on-screen husband and wife duo described their ABC series, which finds them as Jimmy and Maya DiMeo, parents to three teens, one of which has cerebral palsy.

Bowie says the story revolves around his on-screen wife Maya, the “heroic mom played by Minnie Driver.”

“We move into a good neighborhood in a crappy house so that our kids can qualify to go to a good school,” Driver explains of the DiMeo family situation, adding Maya is “not above manipulation to get the needs of her son met.”

Still, though, this “family of modest means can’t go, say, see Hamilton,” Bowie quips.

Bowie summarizes the series as “funny, poignant and occasionally…bizarre.”

“Dope!” Driver excitedly concludes about the duo’s description of the show. “Come on, that was really good!”

“We nailed it,” Bowie says.

Speechless premieres Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 8:30 p.m. on ABC. Check out the interview with Driver and Bowie above.
