Bill Maher calls out Donald Trump, victims of bad police training

During Real Time‘s coverage of the shootings in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Charlotte, North Carolina, host Bill Maher called out Donald Trump for blaming the ensuing protests on drugs. “Of course Donald Trump is making the situation better,” he said, sarcastically, “as he always does.”

Maher was referring to the Republican nominee’s speech at the Shale Insight 2016 Conference in Pittsburgh on Thursday. In response to protests in Charlotte over the fatal shooting of Keith Lamont Scott by police officers, Trump said, “If you’re not aware, drugs are a very, very big factor in what you’re watching on television at night.”

“He’s like your 90-year-old aunt, ‘They’re all taking something,'” Maher joked. “Yeah, they’re taking something, alright — bullets.” Watch the clip from his monologue below.

Elsewhere in the episode, Maher addressed the death of Terence Crutcher in Tulsa. “I could never be a cop, and I admire that they can, but, look, you have to do it better,” he said during a discussion with musician Michael Franti.

On Friday, Oklahoma police officer Betty Shelby was charged with manslaughter in the first degree after she shot and killed Crutcher, an unarmed black man. “She shouldn’t have done that,” Maher said, “but I must say she is also a victim — she’s a victim of bad police training. Police do not train the way they should. Now, if you’re that nervous, you can’t do this job.”

Turning to cellphone footage of the shooting in Charlotte, Maher continued to say, “We don’t know whether he had a gun, but even if he did, you don’t have to kill everytime somebody does something that makes you nervous. We have to train our police to not be that guy.”
