Rob Reiner slams Donald Trump for advocating White Nationalism

Hollywood director Rob Reiner has some choice words for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

During an appearance on Sunday's episode of MSNBC's AM Joy, the When Harry Met Sally and Misery director said he believes the United States is currently in the final stages of overcoming the impact of the Civil War, and that Trump will reverse countless decades of progress if elected in November.

"Donald Trump is leading the way for White Nationalism," he told host Joy Reid, referencing the 70-year-old reality show star's controversial claims he'd ban Muslim immigrants from entering the country. "It's sad because people are hanging on to this idea of 'White America' and 'Immigrant-Free America.' It's scary and sad, [but the election is] the last battle, and I believe we will win it."

Reid then asked Reiner where he thinks a potential Trump presidency could most negatively impact the future of America, to which Reiner responded: "The Supreme Court. People don't talk about it all that much because it's not a sexy issue. The fact of the matter is, if he has one, two, or three appointments, that could change the direction of this country in a scary way for 30 or 40 years. We're talking about civil rights, we're talking about voting rights, we're talking about women's rights; all of these things could be affected by the Supreme Court in a profound way."

This isn't the first time the filmmaker has spoken out against Trump. Reiner publicly criticized Trump on Twitter, calling him a "narcissistic, misogynist racist" and a "pathological liar" Americans shouldn't let anywhere near the White House.

Also during his appearance on AM Joy, Reiner slammed Trump's track record as a businessman as reason enough to keep him from holding office in the most powerful position in the world.

"As far as the economy is concerned, what makes you think he's going to have a better handle on the economy?" Reiner asked. "He's been a complete and utter failure as a businessman. All you have to do is look at his record and see what he's done. He's had six bankruptcies, and he's a failure. As he proudly says, 'I use other people's money to pay for things,' and then in many cases he uses other people's money to buy off elected officials who are threatening to expose his fraudulent activities like Trump University."

Though Reiner said he believes his political perspective is perhaps more informed than many of his Hollywood colleagues because he's "been involved with public policy" in the past (his Parents' Action for Children initiative functioned as a "voice that has the power to change our political landscape and achieve real results for America's families"), Reiner noted conservatives in Hollywood have found it more difficult to support Trump than they did his party forerunner, Mitt Romney.

"It's a hard thing for people to support a racist," Reiner said. "In Hollywood, even if they are Republican, they are humanitarians. They do care about their fellow citizens, and the idea of supporting somebody who is racist and is spouting these racist ideas is way beyond a bridge too far."
