Girls: Allison Williams wraps filming

After six seasons of endless arguments and countless romantic ups and downs, Marnie has officially left the building.

On Thursday, Allison Williams took to Instagram to say goodbye to her long-time character and her Girls family, including Lena Dunham, as the HBO comedy shoots its sixth and final season.

Williams’ powerful photo shows the actress crying while hugging Dunham, and things only get more emotional in her caption.

“Marnie has officially gone wherever all characters go when we stop watching them. And I couldn’t feel luckier that I got to play her,” wrote Williams. “This lady, @lenadunham, gave me everything. She gave me the most incredible challenges and adventures and the opportunity to know and love our GIRLS family. She also gave me her fierce friendship, wit, love, and loyalty, all while making me giggle on a constant basis. Sitting next to Lena while being directed by @jennikonner, it all felt completely right. Then I immediately burst into some pretty rare tears, because it hit me that I don’t know what my adult life looks like without Girls.”

Williams continued on to thank the rest of the Girls crew, including Judd Apatow, who was central to getting the show on the air. “To everyone – our cast, our crew, HBO, my family – thank you. And to @juddapatow, thanks for watching a YouTube video of a 22 year-old fresh out of college and inviting her to audition for Marnie Marie Michaels. I’ve been grateful every single day since. #EndofGirls #ThatsAWrapOnMarnie.”

Dunham — who created the show and wrote and directed several episodes — also took to Instagram on Thursday to explain that being the final actor left on set made her realize the show was really ending.

“We wrapped Shoshanna. We wrapped Jessa. We wrapped Marnie,” wrote Dunham. “One more day. Only Hannah=Lonely Hannah. As Allison said, ‘the cheese stands alone.’ This is getting too real. #lastbitchstanding #endofGIRLS.”

Back in January, Dunham discussed the decision to end the series on season 6, which will air in early 2017. “I conceived of Girls when I was 23 and now I’m nearly 30 — the show has quite perfectly spanned my 20s, the period of time that it’s about — and so it feels like the right time to wrap our story up,” she shared. “We look forward to creating a sixth season that will honor our amazing cast, crew, and fans. And in the Girls universe, nothing ever ends too neatly.”
