Chilean director Pablo Larraín has made a considerable splash on the festival circuit with his first English-language film, Jackie, and now audiences can finally catch an extended look at the upcoming drama, as the first trailer for the Natalie Portman-starring biopic debuted online Wednesday.
The film follows the immediate aftermath of the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy, chronicling the first lady’s bout with grief and her resilience in the wake of intense scrutiny she faced from family, friends, media, and the American public.
In addition to Portman, the film stars Greta Gerwig as Nancy Tuckerman, Peter Sarsgaard as Bobby Kennedy, Max Casella as Jack Valenti, John Carroll Lynch as Lyndon B. Johnson, Billy Crudup as an American journalist, and John Hurt as a priest Jackie confides in throughout the film.
“[The set] was really playful and improvisatory, and I think [the film] allows us to see many different sides of her,” Portman previously told EW of Jackie‘s production. “[We see] the toughness of who she was, dealing with what she had to go through while keeping herself together for the sake of the country and her family, and also the vulnerability and the intelligence of how she really crafted [JFK’s] legacy.”
The 35-year-old has generated strong Oscar buzz for her leading role in the film, as has Noah Oppenheim’s script. Oppenheim won the Best Screenplay award for his work on the film at the 2016 Venice Film Festival, where Jackie world-premiered to glowing reviews, in September. Later that month, Jackie went on to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was awarded the Toronto Platform Prize.
Though Jackie visited both festivals without a distributor, Fox Searchlight purchased domestic rights to the historical drama shortly following its North American debut at TIFF.
Fox will release Jackie to theaters on Dec. 2. Watch the film’s first trailer and see the new poster below, and watch Portman discuss tackling her role in the video above.
