Disney is eyeing the director of the big-screen musical adaptation of Hairspray to work his magic on its Enchanted sequel.

Adam Shankman is in negotiations to direct Disenchanted, the follow-up to the 2007 hit musical comedy, EW has learned.

Amy Adams starred in the original film as Giselle, who is about to marry a handsome prince (James Marsden) when she’s sent away from the animated kingdom of Andalasia and lands in New York City, where she encounters and falls in love with a lawyer (Patrick Dempsey). The cast also included Idina Menzel, Susan Sarandon, and Timothy Spall.

The new story is said to take place 10 years after Enchanted, as Giselle finds herself questioning her happily ever after and accidentally triggers events that make everyone’s lives turn upside down in both the real world and Andalasia.

Adams is expected to return for the sequel, and Disney is said to be eyeing next summer to begin production.

Shankman is no stranger to helming musicals, having brought Hairspray to the big screen in 2007 and Rock of Ages in 2012. His other directing credits include A Walk to Remember, The Pacifier, Bringing Down the House, and Bedtime Stories. He’s repped by UTA and Bloom Hergott.

News of Shankman’s involvement in the project was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
