Doctor Strange director recommends the perfect movie to watch this Halloween

Filmmaker Scott Derrickson has spent the last year overseeing the Benedict Cumberbatch-starring Marvel superhero movie Doctor Strange (out Nov. 4). But the man has some bona fide horror movies to his name, cutting his directorial teeth on 2000’s Hellraiser: Inferno, then moving on to 2005’s The Exorcism of Emily Rose, 2012’s Sinister, and 2014’s Deliver Us From Evil.

So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Derrickson’s Halloween movie recommendation is both comparatively obscure and definitely extreme: director Jee-woon Kim’s 2010 film, I Saw the Devil.

“I’ll recommend one that people probably haven’t seen, which is a serial killer-revenge movie called I Saw the Devil,” Derrickson says. “It’s a Korean film. I consider it probably the best film I’ve seen in the last five years. It has perhaps the best sociopathic killer I’ve seen on screen, maybe with the exception of Hannibal Lecter. South Korea has been making the most interesting movies for the last 15 years and this particular one is my favorite to have come out of there.”
