Since the release of 2001’s Town & Country, it took Hollywood legend Warren Beatty nearly 15 years to return to the screen for a role in his upcoming directorial comeback Rules Don’t Apply and, judging by the film’s new trailer, the finished product is shaping up to be worth the wait.

Rules Don’t Apply — Beatty’s fifth major directorial effort to date — tells the story of an aspiring actress (Lily Collins) who falls for a young, ambitious businessman (Alden Ehrenreich) in 1958 Los Angeles. Though their affections for one another are strong, their mutual employer, famed aviator and Hollywood director Howard Hughes (Beatty) forbids romantic or sexual coupling between his employees.

STARRING: Warren Beatty, Lily Collins, Alden EhrenreichDIRECTED BY: Warren BeattyRELEASE DATE: 11/23Like legendary recluse Howard Hughes, Warren Beatty has been Hollywood’s Invisible Man for the past 15 years. So it’s fitting that during his hiatus he was toiling away on a film about…Howard Hughes. Rules Don’t Apply is less a biopic of the batty billionaire than a late-’50s romance in which Beatty’s Hughes (he also wrote and directed) looks on as two of his employees (Lily Collins as a wannabe actress, Alden Ehrenreich as her driver) weigh their attraction against their religious upbringings. Beatty, who wrote the film’s script and produced the roughly $26.7 million picture, assembled an all-star cast for the film, including his real-life spouse, Annette Bening, who also hits screens later this year in Mike Mills’ 20th Century Women. Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, Matthew Broderick, Taissa Farmiga, Oliver Platt, Steve Coogan, Haley Bennett, Candice Bergen, and Ed Harris also have supporting roles.

“I never lost my curiosity about him,” Beatty previously told EW of Hughes, and the film’s long-gestating production cycle. “It’s just that I don’t run around doing movies all the time.”

The film will have its world premiere on Nov. 10 as part of the annual AFI Fest, which has launched high profile titles such as Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper and Ava DuVernay’s Selma into the Oscar race in recent years. Beatty has one competitive Academy Award win to his name, for directing the 1981 historical drama Reds. In addition to four acting nominations, Beatty was previously nominated for producing Best Picture nominees like Bugsy, Heaven Can Wait, and Bonnie and Clyde, as well as for writing screenplays for Bulworth and Shampoo.

Rules Don’t Apply opens nationwide via 20th Century Fox on Nov. 23. Watch the film’s final trailer in the video above.
