Stephen Colbert and Mel Gibson waxed nostalgic about the Oscar-winning director’s past — specifically, his personal life — on Tuesday night’s The Late Show.

In a preview of Gibson’s appearance, Colbert and Gibson are seen lying together on a plaid blanket under the “stars.”

“Hey, Mel Mels,” the host asks. “When you look back on your life, do you think you’ll have any regrets?”

After a short pause, the 60-year-old replies simply, “No,” joking later, “They tend to come in clusters.”

The actor and filmmaker has a different response, though, when Colbert asks, “If you could go back in time, what would you tell your younger self?”

“Oh, well, don’t be so caught up in the little things; take advantage of all the gifts the world has to offer; and live every day to the fullest,” he begins, dishing out some typical and sage advice, before concluding to big reaction from the Ed Sullivan Theater crowd, “I’d also tell myself — my younger self — to shut the f— up.”

Gibson, who says he’s been sober a decade now, is promoting his first directorial effort in as much time, Hacksaw Ridge, in theaters Friday. His career stalled after his 2006 drunk driving arrest — the same year his last movie, Apocalypto, was released — when he infamously made headlines following an anti-Semitic tirade.
