Starship Troopers film based on Robert Heinlein novel in the works

Hollywood is taking another crack at adapting the universe of Starship Troopers for the big screen.

EW has confirmed Columbia is currently working on a film version of writer Robert Heinlein’s 1959 science fiction novel of the same name. Despite a previous report from The Hollywood Reporter, sources close to production tell EW the film is not a remake of the 1997 action flick directed by Paul Verhoeven. No personnel from the 1997 film, which grossed $121 million worldwide, are involved.

Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, the writing duo behind the upcoming Baywatch movie, are working on the Starship Troopers screenplay. The film will be produced by Neal H. Moritz (The Fast and the Furious, I Am Legend, 21 Jump Street) and Toby Jaffe (Total Recall, Prom Night), with Matthew Milam overseeing production for Columbia.

Verhoeven’s adaptation of Heinlein’s book, which stars Casper Van Dien and Denise Richards in a tale revolving around giant bug-like aliens that threaten the future of humanity, spawned three direct-to-DVD sequels between 2004 and 2012. It has become a cult favorite among sci-fi fans for its satirical themes relating to war culture, fascism, and the science fiction genre itself.
