Yes, that is Gary Oldman. The celebrated actor is practically unrecognizable in the first look at his transformation into historic British Prime Minister Winston Churchill for Darkest Hour.

Focus Features and Working Title released the image from the film over social media as production commenced this past week. Joe Wright (Anna Karenina) directs Darkest Hour from an original screenplay by Oscar-nominated writer Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything).

Oldman joins a long line of actors who’ve portrayed Churchill, including Brendan Gleeson (Into the Storm) and Timothy Spall (The King’s Speech), but Oldman’s portrayal focuses on “one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty, and freedom of a nation.”

The cast also includes John Hurt (Jackie) as Neville Chamberlain, Lily James (Cinderella) as Churchill’s personal secretary, Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as King George VI, and Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient) as Churchill’s wife, Clementine.

Darkest Hour is set for release on Nov. 24, 2017. See the image of Oldman as Churchill below.
