Blindspot: Who is the mole?

It’s the question Blindspot fans have been asking all season: Who is the mole within the FBI? The good news: We’ll finally get answers in Wednesday’s midseason finale. The bad news: The reveal will likely shatter us.

Upon discovering that Sandstorm had a mole planted within the FBI that isn’t Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander), the almost-too-obvious answer was that newcomer Nas Kamal (Archie Panjabi), the head of a secret division of the NSA, was working against the team from within.

Knowing they’re vulnerable after the loss of their leader Mayfair, Nas swooped in with a sob story about one of her own colleagues at the NSA being a sleeper agent for Sandstorm, therefore gaining the team’s sympathy and ultimately their trust — if she is the mole, she’s likely talking about herself here. Also, potentially in the vein of Hydra sleeper Agent Ward (Brett Dalton) sleeping with Agent May (Ming-Na Wen) to gain her trust on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nas did the same with Weller (Sullivan Stapleton).

Alas, that scenario could be exactly what executive producer Martin Gero wants us to think, throwing an obvious suspect at us early on to detract us from someone who’s been working with the team from the beginning: Borden (Ukweli Roach). He’s literally everyone’s therapist, so he could glean where Jane Doe’s allegiances lie, while also getting a slow, but steady stream of information on their cases. And what better way to get access to top secret information than to start dating the keeper of the keys and puzzle master Patterson (Ashley Johnson)? Oh, Patterson, so unlucky in love — if this is the case! Seriously, his lie about speaking Arabic for a food order was so transparent.

But what if it was too transparent for a reason?! What if this is exactly what Gero wants?! What if the reveal is even more heartbreaking? There’s a growing theory that Zapata (Audrey Esparza) is the mole, though that’s tough to believe given how hesitant she was to plant that bug last season for Carter. There’s also the question of why Sandstorm has been spying on Weller since he was in training. Maybe the team wasn’t supposed to discover that tape? Maybe he’s actually been the spy this whole time?
