Celebrating David Bowie: Global concert series celebrates singer's birthday

David Bowie’s friends and collaborators will celebrate the late singer’s 70th birthday with a major global concert series called Celebrating David Bowie, hosted by longtime friend Gary Oldman.

According to Bowie’s website, Celebrating David Bowie, will celebrate Bowie’s life and legacy with concerts that will be announced “sporadically, all take place in cities that have a strong connection with David Bowie and his work. All feature the core 30 musicians travelling, plus another 40 or more local musicians, to create a sound like no other.”

The first show will take place on Jan. 8, almost exactly a year after Bowie’s death, at the Brixton Academy in London and will feature performances from musicians who played on Bowie’s final album, Blackstar, as well as former collaborators like Earl Slick, Mark Plati, Mike Garson, Gerry Leonard, and Gail Ann Dorsey. Proceeds will benefit the Children & the Arts charity. CelebratingDavidBowie.com also lists a show taking place in Tokyo on Feb. 3.

Tickets for the Brixton Academy show go on sale Wednesday at 9 a.m.
