Patriots Day trailer: Mark Wahlberg hunts Boston Marathon bombers

In the spring of 2013, two perpetrators set off a pair of pressure cooker bombs during the Boston Marathon, which was attended by more than 20,000 people, rocking the Massachusetts city and sending emotional shockwaves throughout the nation.

Following the release of his Deepwater Horizon and Lone Survivor, filmmaker Peter Berg’s latest action-drama based on true events, Patriots Day, chronicles the harrowing city-wide manhunt to locate the terrorists responsible for the deadly acts of terrorism, and the film’s new trailer serves as a haunting — yet inspiring — reminder of the resilience of spirit in the face of unimaginable horror.

The film’s official synopsis reads: “In the aftermath of an unspeakable attack, Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg) joins courageous survivors, first responders, and investigators in a race against the clock to hunt down the bombers before they strike again. Weaving together the stories of Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon), Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (J.K. Simmons) and nurse Carol Saunders (Michelle Monaghan) this visceral and unflinching chronicle captures the suspense of one of the most sophisticated manhunts in law enforcement history and celebrates the strength of the people of Boston.”

Berg helms the project from a script he co-wrote with Matt Cook, Joshua Zetumer, and Eric Johnson. Academy Award-winning composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross crafted the film’s original score, while Wahlberg, who previousy starred in both Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon, served as one of the film’s seven producers. Patriots Day also stars Supergirl‘s Melissa Benoist as Katherine Russell, the wife of Tamerlan Tsarnaev and The Naked Brothers Band‘s Alex Wolff as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

The latest Berg/Wahlberg collaboration is currently set to close the AFI Fest in Hollywood on Nov. 17. The prestigious spot at the tail end of the festival was previously held by Oscar-bound films like Adam McKay’s The Big Short, Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher, and the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis across the past three years.

Patriots Day opens Dec. 21 in Boston, New York City, and Los Angeles before expanding nationwide on Jan. 13, 2017. Watch the film’s first full trailer in the video above.
