All rise for the honorable Justice Strauss.
Daniel Handler — a.k.a. Lemony Snicket, author of the A Series of Unfortunate Events books — revealed first looks at two characters from the upcoming Netflix adaptation on Monday. Take a peek at Strauss (Joan Cusack) and Dr. Georgina Orwell (Catherine O’Hara).
The series stars Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf, the sinister guardian of the orphaned Baudelaire children. Justice Strauss (Cusack) is Olaf’s neighbor; the character debuts in the first book, The Bad Beginning, and instantly becomes a favorite of young Violet, Klaus, and Sunny.
Meanwhile, Dr. Orwell (O’Hara) does more harm than good to the orphans. The optometrist, who debuts in The Miserable Mill (the fourth book), has several tricks up her sleeve, even hypnotizing one of the children to aid in Olaf’s endeavors.
There’s a knowing nod to the A Series of Unfortunate Events film with these two reveals: O’Hara played Justice Strauss in the 2004 movie, which encompassed the first three books of Snicket’s 13-installment series.
A Series of Unfortunate Events season 1 will be released Jan. 13, 2017 on Netflix.
