A Tribe Called Quest: Entertainment Weekly The Show goes inside the new album

On Friday, legendary hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest released their first album in 18 years, We Got It From Here…Thank You 4 Your Service. Three hip-hop enthusiasts — Bingeworthy‘s Touré, Heather B. of Sway in the Morning (and the original cast of The Real World, and Kamilah Forbes from the Apollo Theatre — sat down with Entertainment Weekly: The Show‘s Ricky Camilleri to exchange thoughts on the group’s comeback as well as A Tribe Called Quest’s impact on hip-hop.

In the clip above, Touré explains that the group reunited in late 2015 and began working on We Got It From Here shortly before Phife Dawg’s death in March. The rapper died due to complications from diabetes in the midst of recording the album, which the group had to finish without him

“He would’ve recorded more if he had more time,” he says. “They’re super happy and proud of what they got out of him. He’s on a lot of songs.”

Heather B. then discusses how A Tribe Called Quest influenced artists to come, even with their style. “I think we all related to how they dressed and what they wore because the images prior to that was a lot of gold chains and things like that,” she says. “Not every kid could afford that. So here you had these guys kind of embracing their ethnicity and we all kind of connected and related to that.”
