We already knew that someone from The Vampire Diaries will make their way to New Orleans to pick up a dark object, but now we have news of a crossover that will actually play out on screen.

But what this really means for fans is that they’ll get to check in on Alaric in the future. Considering The Originals is a couple years ahead of TVD in terms of timeline, this crossover could ensure that Alaric survives TVD‘s final season… unless the TVD series finale jumps into the future and surpasses The Originals. Okay, this is getting complicated.

The Originals returns Friday, March 17 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
