Leonard Cohen Hallelujah: Hot 100 features song

Leonard Cohen’s beloved 1984 song “Hallelujah” cracked the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time, debuting at No. 59 this week following the Canadian singer-songwriter’s death on Nov. 7.

Billboard reports the song drew 3.8 million U.S. streams in the week since Cohen’s death and also landed on the Digital Song Sales chart at No. 12.

Cohen originally released the track on his 1984 album Various Positions and “Hallelujah” has been covered by dozens of artists since its debut. Though Jeff Buckley’s famed version never cracked the Hot 100, Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris’ 2010 rendition hit No. 13 on the chart.

Cohen died on Nov. 7 after a fall in the middle of the night, but his death was not announced until Nov. 10. The news came after the release of Cohen’s 14th studio album, You Want It Darker, which landed at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the week ending in Dec. 3. The Essential Leonard Cohen, a 2002 compilation album of some of his greatest songs, also landed on the chart at No. 13.
