Since Donald Trump was elected president, his Twitter account has remained an online platform for the Republican to air grievances big and small on everything from the media to the cast of Hamilton, and Bernie Sanders criticized those tweets in an appearance on Tuesday’s Conan.

“It’s delusional, it’s totally insane,” Sanders said of a recent tweet in which Trump falsely claimed that he won the popular vote if you don’t include the “millions of people who voted illegally.”

“When he says that, he’s really sending a signal to Republicans all over the country, and what he’s saying is, we have got to suppress the vote,” Sanders added. “We have got to make it harder for poor people, for people of color, immigrants, elderly people, to participate because they may be voting against us. And that’s scary stuff.”

Host Conan O’Brien then referenced another Trump tweet in which the president-elect suggested anyone who burns the American flag should be stripped of their citizenship or thrown in jail.

“We have massive income and wealth inequality, we have 43 million people living in poverty, we have the deal with climate change… and he’s talking about free people who might burn the American flag?” Sanders said. “There’s a hidden message in that, and that is be careful if you are prepared to dissent. The Supreme Court has said that that is within constitutional framework, that that’s a form of expression. It’s not just the American flag here, we’re watching you. That’s what’s scary about that.”

Sanders went on to express his concern for the future of the country once Trump takes office, citing Trump’s campaign and his efforts to divide the American population based on race and religion.
