“I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,” but this is not The Last of Us.

In an explosive ending to day one of Playstation Experience 2016, Naughty Dog introduced The Last of Us Part II, the sequel to 2013’s critical and commercial hit. The debut trailer launches players back into Ellie and Joel’s world, filled with emotion and stunning art direction.

Set in a deep woods cabin, an older Ellie plucks away on a guitar, crooning about her decisions on life and death. “What are you doing, kiddo?” asks Joel as he enters the room. “You really gonna go through with this?” Various bodies and pools of blood are strewn around the cabin, signaling danger is far from eradicated.

“I’m gonna find, and I’m gonna kill, every last one of them,” says Ellie. As for the reason behind a sequel, creative director Neil Druckmann shared in a release, “We knew that it needed to be a story worth telling and, perhaps more importantly, a story worthy of Joel and Ellie.”

The first title’s cliffhanger ending set up for the sequel, allowing fans to see where the older and wiser versions of the traveling pair are now. The weight of Joel’s final decision to save Ellie permeates the subtle tension between the two.

An official release date has not yet been announced.
