Fans have seen a lot of Michael Fassbender in Assassin’s Creed, the film adaptation of the popular gaming franchise. But the final trailer offers plenty more surprises, including new details on the film’s MacGuffin.

We know Fassbender plays Callum Lynch, a new character introduced to the universe. As a descendant of a shadowy society of assassins, he uses revolutionary technology to unlock the memories of his ancestor from 15th century Spain, Aguilar. He also finds himself at odds with the oppressive Templars, but now we know why they’re interested in Callum.

As Jeremy Irons’ Rikkin says in the trailer, The Templars are looking for the Apple of Eden, which will crush “any impulse towards independence or rebellion.” In the video games, the Apples of Eden are pieces of technology used by the Isu, the first civilization, to enslave mankind. Callum is the key to finding the artifact since he’s part of the last bloodline of assassins dedicated to protecting it.

Assassin’s Creed, helmed by Fassbender’s Macbeth director Justin Kurzel, also features Marion Cotillard, Brendan Gleeson, and Michael K. Williams, all of whom get more screen time in this last extended preview.

The film will open on Dec. 21. Watch the trailer above.
