'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child': Broadway transfer in talks

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the West End stage play which tells the eighth story in the Harry Potter series, is on its way to New York with plans to open at Broadway’s Lyric Theatre in the spring of 2018.

The show’s producers are in exclusive talks with Ambassador Theatre Group to have the Lyric Theatre play host to the expansive show after a multi-million dollar renovation to the house. Among the details that ticket-buyers ought to know: The theatre’s 1,900 seats will be reduced to approximately 1,500.

Veteran stage producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, who are behind the project, offered statements on the extent of the discussions to transfer the show, which opened earlier this summer in London:

In a press statement, J.K. Rowling said, “I’m delighted we are one step closer in bringing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to Broadway and very excited by the proposed plans.”

Cursed Child premiered on July 30, 2016 at London’s Palace Theatre. The show is presented in two parts and tells the story of an adult Harry Potter, now 19 years older and father to three school-age children including Albus, whose resistance to his father’s fame begins to manifest itself in dark ways. Developments at Hogwarts and in the wizarding world continue to put strain on their relationship, until a misguided use of magic sends them both scrambling to right their wrongs before time, quite literally, runs out.
