Kendrick Lamar wins Video of the Year at the MTV VMAs

Kendrick Lamar has won Video of the Year at the 2017 VMA Awards.

The rapper’s “HUMBLE.” triumphed in a stacked category that included Alessia Cara’s “Scars to Your Beautiful,” Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic,” DJ Khaled’s “Wild Thoughts” (feat. Rihanna, Bryson Tiller), and the Weeknd’s “Reminder.”

“Man, I want to thank God for giving us these amazing talents,” said Lamar, accepting his second-ever moon person.

The musician went on to thank his manager Dave Free and video director Dave Meyers, both of whom Lamar brought to the stage and let take the mic.

Lamar debuted the remarkable video earlier this year. Across the clip’s three minutes, the Compton MC presides over the Last Supper, dons white papal robes, golfs off the roof of his car, and even erupts in flames. The cut, which scaled the Billboard Hot 100 and earned Lamar his first No. 1 song as a lead artist, served as the first single off Lamar’s fourth LP, DAMN., which dropped in April.

EW’s Eric Renner Brown reviewed the set, remarking that even in the rapper’s bleakest moments, he’s able to “find humanity in desolate situations.” Brown continued, “DAMN. contains stunning beauty if you listen closely: a vocoder-driven duet with Rihanna about commitment (“LOYALTY.”), an exultant ode to work ethic (“GOD.”), a simple love song featuring rising singer Zacari (“LOVE.”).”
