The Favourite gets huge Oscar boost with 14 Critics Choice Award nominations

One of the most reliable Oscar bellwethers has given Yorgos Lanthimos’ period dramedy The Favourite a definitive boost in the awards race.

The 18th century-set film (starring Olivia Colman as Britain’s Queen Anne and Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone as advisors clashing for her favorable affections) leads the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s Critics Choice Awards with 14 overall nods Monday morning — the same number Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water garnered last year ahead of its eventual best picture victory at the Oscars.

Hot off its five Golden Globe nominations, The Favourite racks up more recognition from the BFCA for its central cast (all of which received nominations in their respective categories) as well as its screenplay, direction, and several technical honors. Days after it scored a Golden Globe nod for best picture, Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther appears in 12 Critics Choice categories, further bolstering its bid for Academy recognition as well.

Other films making headway in the Oscar race as part of the BFCA’s annual lineup include Bradley Cooper’s current best picture frontrunner A Star is Born with nine nods (including best actress for Lady Gaga), Adam McKay’s late-breaking contender Vice with nine nominations, Mary Poppins Returns with 9 nominations, TIFF People’s Choice Award winner Green Book with seven nominations, Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk with five nods, and Damien Chazelle’s Neil Armstrong biopic First Man, which had yet to make a dent on the awards trail before racking up 10 nods at the Critics Choice nominations announcement.

Since 2008, the Critics Choice Awards have correctly predicted Oscar’s eventual best picture winner seven times, while that number jumps to eight for best actor contenders and dips to six for the best actress contest. Though the BFCA’s membership is primarily journalist-focused and doesn’t include Academy crossover, the groups’ tastes largely dovetail with each other as the awards race progresses each year.

On the TV side, Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora, FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace, and AMC’s now-concluded The Americans all scored five nominations. Overall, HBO and Netflix lead the pack with 20 nominations each, followed by FX with 16, Amazon with 12, and NBC with 11.
