How Bill Paxton's son James honored family's Twister red carpet look at Twisters premiere

James Paxton cameos in the "standalone sequel" to his dad's 1996 blockbuster.

Like mother, like son in the Paxton family.

Almost exactly 28 years after his dad, the late Bill Paxton, walked the red carpet at the premiere of Twister, James Paxton is celebrating his role in the "standalone sequel" to the 1996 blockbuster.

James makes an appearance in the new film Twisters as a disgruntled motel guest (as seen in a photo exclusive to Entertainment Weekly earlier today). As the actor and singer prepared to celebrate his latest role, he found that he was serendipitously honoring mother, Louise Paxton, with his outfit choice.

"I want to wear something really cool, and so I'm working with a stylist who I've worked with for many years and she suggested a Dolce and Gabbana suit," James tells EW. "I was really excited because I told my mom, 'I'm going to wear Dolce at the Twisters premiere!' And she goes, 'I wore Dolce and Gabbana at the original premiere!' And then she pulls out her original outfit that she still has from the '90s, and there's photos of her in this great white outfit with Dad. It's so crazy and kind of meant to be. And I was telling the rep at Dolce that yesterday, they just thought it was really cool."

James' first major film credit is for a role in 2003's Spy Kids 3: Game Over, but he began working regularly as an actor about a decade ago and was a series regular on the USA drama Eyewitness. He also guest-starred on Marvel's Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC as an "alternate version" of John Garrett, a role his father had played prior to his death in 2017.

On Friday, James will release a new song, "Count on Me," honoring his dad. He also stars alongside Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen in the upcoming movie Last Train to Fortune. McDowell has been trying to get the western made for decades and was glad to cast James, especially since he is around the same age his father would have been when they almost made the movie in 1994.

"I feel closest to him when I'm working on sets," James says of his father. "I just think back on all of the amazing work that he got to do, and that's where I really feel him. I mean, I feel him all the time, but especially then."

Twisters blows into theaters on July 19.
