Donald Glover says Brad Pitt sidestepped giving him advice on Mr. & Mrs. Smith

"He Brad Pitt-ed his way out of it," Glover joked during an appearance on "The Tonight Show."

Spies are good at keeping secrets, and apparently, that applies to actors playing spies too.

While appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Donald Glover revealed that Brad Pitt wasn't particularly helpful in a conversation they had about Glover starring in a new TV adaptation of Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

"He didn't give me any real pointers," Glover said. "He kind of Brad Pitt-ed his way out of it. He just kind of like charmed his way. He was like, 'Yeah, you know, you'll do great.'"

Glover certainly could have used some guidance, since he also admitted to Fallon that before joining the spy thriller, he had never seen the 2005 movie. "I hadn't at the time," he said. "I've seen it, obviously, by now. It'd be scary if I hadn't. It'd be like, 'Oh, that's what this is about? Spies?'"

When the project came his way, Glover decided he should probably check out the film, though he had reservations because of his general lack of love for remakes. But after seeing it and talking it out with his brother, he realized that it was really just a good date movie. "It's just a relationship, but with spies," he reflected.

Glover and his costar Maya Erskine were also flying a bit blind with each other, considering they had never met in person before filming began. "We didn't do a chemistry read or anything," noted the actor.

Still, they both found this helpful, given that the new Prime Video series reimagines the action to revolve around two spies who are forced into new identities in an arranged marriage. "I feel like the awkwardness that was supposed to be there was ripe," joked Glover.

All eight episodes of Mr. & Mrs. Smith drop on Feb. 2. Watch the video for more from Glover and Erskine.
