Cher says she 'totally chickened out' while writing memoir: 'I have to go back and man up'

"I didn’t put in some things that needed to be in."

Cher is finally feeling strong enough to share all the juicy details about her legendary life in her forthcoming memoir.

The “Believe” singer, 77, admitted that she’s still working on her long-awaited tell-all because she was initially avoiding parts of her life that she didn’t feel quite ready to share with the world.

“I just totally chickened out,” Cher confessed on Thursday’s episode of The Tonight Show. “I didn’t put in some things that needed to be in. And they’re not comfortable, but they need to be in, so I have to go back and man up.”

“You gotta do it,” host Jimmy Fallon agreed. “It’s beyond therapy. It’s tough.”

The Grammy-winner, who originally announced the project back in 2017, noted that it’s going to be a pretty sizable memoir when it does finally hit bookshelves. “I’ve lived too long and done too much and so it’s like it should be the encyclopedia,” she explained, before jokingly adding, “Not that you guys know what that is.”

When Cher confirmed that she hadn't selected a title for the project just yet, Fallon began spitballing potential ideas including I Got Scoops, Babe and Over-Cher-Ing. In response, Cher simply closed her eyes and shook her head.

And, just in case she was wondering, Fallon also gave Cher his blessing to include him in the book, which caused her to burst out laughing. “If it’s a big book!” He proclaimed. “C’mon!”

The Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again star previously told The Hollywood Reporter in August that she was “so close” to finishing the book.

“Well, we’re almost finished because [HarperCollins] goes, ‘Cher, how long are you going to work on this?’” she said. ‘That’s difficult too, but we’re so close.”
