New York Comic Con: R.L. Stine's Goosebumps advice for Rob Letterman

Jack Black takes on the role of famed author R.L. Stine in Rob Letterman’s upcoming film, Goosebumps — but it was no easy task bringing the well-known stories to the big screen.

The actor, along with Stine, Letterman, and his young costars, stopped by the EW and Sirius XM suite at New York Comic Con to chat about the movie, which arrives in theaters on Oct. 16. The film follows a group of teens who find themselves battling against Stine’s creations, which have gone from fictional creatures to real-life terrors.

“There’s a lot of dedicated Goosebumps fans and you have to — when you do an adaptation — be very conscious of staying true to the spirit of the books,” Letterman said.

But Stine did offer up some advice to the director: Keep it scary and funny at the same time. (The author said he hates hearing parents say the books gave their kids nightmares.) But he’s “satisfied” with how the adaptation turned out, as it’s been 23 years in the making.

As for working with Black, his costars – Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, and Ryan Lee – had nothing but good things to say. Although, he might have paid them for the glowing reviews. Watch their full interview above.
