American Gothic at Comic-Con: Stars tease killer reveal

'It's a great payoff,' says Megan Ketch

American Gothic isn’t even halfway through its first season — five of the 13 episodes have aired so far — but anticipation for the killer reveal has already reached a fever pitch.

“Who is it? Who is it? Tell me: Who is it?” said Megan Ketch (Tessa Ross) when she stopped by the EW lounge at San Diego Comic-Con Thursday.

“It’s her,” joked Justin Chatwin (Cam Hawthorne), pointing to Ketch.

Then Ketch set him straight, explaining she “was a baby” when the Silver Bells Killer struck, making it impossible for her to be the Hawthorne family’s serial murderer.

As the costars pointed out, they were once as clueless about the killer’s identity as America is — a reality that influenced the ensemble to make their characters even more suspicious beyond what the script dictated.

“Everyone had a moment where [they asked], ‘What if I’m the killer? And I’m not playing that note that I’m the killer?'” explained Chatwin. “So we would all at a certain point in a scene give that I’m-a-killer look.”

That’s since changed. As the cast prepares to film the season finale, they’ve already had time to accept who the Silver Bells Killer really is.

“Somebody had to spell it out for me,” said Chatwin.

Ketch’s discovery process was completely opposite. “I had suspicions of this particular character,” she confessed. “I did. I will admit. I will give myself a little pat on the back for that. But only in the middle of episode 12 did it sort of concretize for me.”

The duo also discussed Phyllis’ (Lorna Wilson) questionable behavior and Cam’s hallucinations. Find out what they had to say in the video above.

American Gothic airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
