Joseph Gordon-Levitt is bugging out in Oliver Stone's new Snowden trailer

Hacker, traitor, soldier, spy — Joseph Gordon-Levitt may be all those things and more in the latest trailer for Oliver Stone’s politically charged cyber-thriller Snowden.

Featuring Gordon-Levitt in the title role, the film dramatizes the story of NSA and CIA contractor Edward Snowden, who infamously leaked thousands classified documents about the United States’ secret global surveillance program in 2013. Snowden’s actions led to him being hailed as a hero by some and accused of treason by others.

In the trailer, unveiled Thursday at Comic-Con, Snowden is shown learning about the scope of U.S. surveillance, questioning his own involvement, and gradually becoming more paranoid. He eventually goes on the run to reveal the operation to journalists Glenn Greenwald (Zachary Quinto) and Ewen MacAskill (Tom Wilkinson) and documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras (Melissa Leo).

Ratcheting up the tension are a haunting rendition of “When the Saints Go Marching In,” an increasingly frenzied pace, and some explicit Big Brother imagery.
