Move over Doctor Who, a new time-travel series is headed to the airwaves, and this one is Timeless.

The stars of the upcoming series — Goran Visnjic, Matt Lanter, and Malcolm Barrett — stopped by EW’s studio at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday to tease the time-traveling drama, explain the physics of the show, and talk the great wardrobe.

With different time machines in media, such as The TARDIS or Simon Wells’ 2002 film The Time Machine, it presents a challenge for how to make a new machine stand out from the rest of the pack. “The brand new one is very cool,” explains Barrett on their take of the machinery. “The design team created this really intricate thing that looks real.” The cast seemed mesmerized by the prototype itself. “I think all three of us were taken aback by how large it is,” adds Lanter.

The series follows a trio that must stop Garcia Flynn (Visnjic) from changing events of the past that will ultimately affect the future. In turn, it’s easy to pigeonhole Flynn as the villain, but the actor playing him doesn’t see it in such black-and-white terms. “He has his own agenda to go into the past and change things because he thinks that those things need to be done,” explains Visnjic on his character’s motivations. “Now, are we going to call him a bad guy or a villain? Of course when I play a bad guy I think I’m right.”

With a series that takes place over several decades and eras, the costume team has a tricky but interesting job. “Each episode we go to a different time period, and so because of that we wind up wearing all these clothes and all those trappings of each of these eras,” states Barrett about the wardrobe. “I get a cool jacket, but I need to know the time to tell how cool this jacket is.”

Timeless premieres Monday, Oct. 3 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. Check out our full interview with the cast, above.
