Netflix bringing The Defenders, Stranger Things, and more to Comic-Con

Plus, there's a surprise screening on Friday night.

Netflix announced plans to turn San Diego Comic-Con upside down. Stranger Things season 2 and Marvel’s The Defenders will have a big presence at the international convention later this July, alongside original film offerings Bright and Death Note.

Two of the streaming giant’s most lucrative properties are taking over Hall H, a space typically reserved for the heavy hitters like HBO’s Game of Thrones, the latest from Marvel and DC, and AMC’s The Walking Dead. Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb is bringing “surprise guests” from The Defenders to the main stage beginning Friday, July 21 at 5:15 p.m. PT.

We can safely assume that means Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), and Finn Jones (Iron Fist) will be on hand, since the announcement reads, “Four iconic super heroes. One stage. Nuff Said!” Though, we already know of an impressive list of new and returning players, including Sigourney Weaver as the villain, Alexandra. Netflix and Marvel will also be giving fans “an exclusive look into the super hero team-up.”

Stranger Things cast and creators will then take Hall H on Saturday, July 22 at 3:00 p.m. to screen never-before-seen footage of season 2. Matt and Ross Duffer created the series, which will return Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Winona Ryder, Finn Wolfhard, David Harbour, Charlie Heaton, Natalia Dyer, Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin, and Joe Keery alongside newcomers like Dacre Montgomery, Sadie Sink, and Sean Astin.

Repping Netflix’s Bright at the Con will be director David Ayer (Suicide Squad) and his cast Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry, and Edgar Ramirez. The sci-fi film will take up a portion of a panel on Thursday, July 20, beginning at 3:15 p.m. with “a sneak peek” beyond what fans saw in the initial trailer.

Though specific names weren’t specified, the cast and filmmakers behind Death Note will comprise the other half of the panel with footage of their own. Adam Wingard (Blair Witch, The Guest) helms the film, based on the Japanese manga. Nat Wolff, Margaret Qualley, Willem Dafoe, and Keith Stanfield star.

If that weren’t enough, a surprise screening of a Netflix original film will take place on the night of July 20. Fans are invited to the Convention Center lobby beforehand for interactive activities and autograph signings, while the secret screening will commence at 10:00 p.m. PT at the Horton Grand Theater.

The Netflix Experience will also open earlier that day at the Hilton Gaslamp with a virtual reality experience of the Upside Down, giveaways, and sneak peek at Netflix’s slate. The space will be open on Thursday, Friday, Satuday between 11:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., and Sunday between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
