Danielle Brooks is latest actor to land Oscar and Tony nominations for the same role

With her nod for "The Color Purple," Brooks joins the likes of Viola Davis, Joel Grey, and James Earl Jones earning awards recognition for the same part on stage and on screen.

Tony and Oscar are quite the pair.

On Tuesday morning, Danielle Brooks became the latest actor to land an Oscar nomination for a role that also earned her a Tony nomination. Brooks' nods came for her work as Sofia in The Color Purple, first in 2016 for the Broadway revival and now for the 2023 big screen adaptation of the film.

Brooks also becomes the second woman nominated for an Oscar for portraying Sofia, following Oprah Winfrey's 1986 Academy Award nomination for her work in the non-musical film adaptation. Winfrey, who produced both the Broadway musical and the new film, congratulated Brooks on Instagram, writing, "Woke up to the news of [Danielle Brooks] being nominated for an Academy Award for Actress in a Supporting Role in [The Color Purple]. Talked to her immediately and we screamed and cried and jumped for joy together on the phone. Look what God has done."

The Color Purple star is the first since Viola Davis to snag dual Tony and Oscar nominations for the same role. Davis won an Oscar in 2017 for her work in Fences, which was preceded by a Tony win for the same part in 2010. Helen Mirren also occupies this rarefied air, albeit for playing the same character, Queen Elizabeth II, in two different Peter Morgan projects — an Oscar for 2006's The Queen and a Tony win in 2015 for The Audience.
