Watch Drew Barrymore get emotional watching The Wedding Singer: 'We made such a good movie'

“I love you so much," she said to costar Adam Sandler. "Happy New Year!”

An emotional Drew Barrymore was recently reminded why her 1998 film The Wedding Singer is widely considered to be a perfect romcom.

On Wednesday, the daytime TV host posted an Instagram video of herself crying as she watched the film at home before giving a special shoutout to her costar, Adam Sandler. “We made such a good movie,” she said. “I love you so much. Happy New Year!”

Barrymore, who first met Sandler at the Newsroom Cafe, then revealed her plans for the day had been derailed because she simply couldn’t take her eyes off of the film.

“It started this morning and I was on my way to yoga class and I am taking the next later one so I can watch it,” she said, before panning the camera toward the television, which was playing the film’s infamous plane scene

In her caption, Barrymore added, “I love you so much @adamsandler. The Wedding Singer came on my TV as I was getting ready to leave the house and I had to take in this moment and watch it.”

Directed by Frank Coraci, The Wedding Singer followed the connection between Robbie (Sandler), a brokenhearted crooner who doesn’t believe in love after being ditched at the altar by his fiancée, and waitress Julia (Barrymore), who is engaged to the terrible Glenn Gulia (Matthew Glave). Over the course of the film — and with a little help from Billy Idol — the pair end up falling for one another and leaving their respective evil exes in the past.

Sandler confessed that he would pick The Wedding Singer to be the film that best represents his career while visiting The Drew Barrymore Show in 2022.

"I worked with this young lady one time. I met her at the Newsroom Café. She came in, she had stylish hair, a little pinkish,” he remarked about meeting and working with Barrymore on the film. “She came in, we jammed on a movie idea, we got together, we shot it, we had the best time ever.”

Sandler and Barrymore would go onto star in two more films together over the years: 2004’s 50 First Dates and 2014’s Blended. During their 2022 interview, the pair both agreed it was time for them to return to the screen together in a fourth film.

“We've done it three times now,” Barrymore commented, “So we know we have more to go."
