Elmo asks how everyone's doing on social media, the internet responds honestly

D is for Depression.

Elmo asked how everyone was doing on social media. Elmo should have known what Elmo was getting into.

Elmo’s official account posted a simple question on X (formerly Twitter): “Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?”

It seems that the whole world had long awaited an opportunity to vent to its favorite red Muppet, who is canonically three years old. Thousands upon thousands of responses — some ironic, others earnest — lamented tragedies great and small, from layoffs to divorces to heartbreaking football losses. The overwhelming majority were united in exhaustion and melancholy.

“Elmo I'm gonna be real I am at my f---ing limit,” wrote one user, who received almost half a million likes for their response.

“Elmo each day the abyss we stare into grows a unique horror. one that was previously unfathomable in nature. our inevitable doom which once accelerated in years, or months, now accelerates in hours, even minutes,” another responded. “However I did have a good grapefruit earlier, thank you for asking.”

“Hi Elmo I’ve accepted the fact I’ll never be able to buy a home in this economy,” another user said.

Several prominent celebrities got in on the fun (or lack thereof).

"resisting the urge to tell elmo that i am kinda sad,” wrote West Side Story star Rachel Zegler.

“I'm just looking for somebody to talk to and show me some love if you know what I mean,” responded T-Pain.

“‘We've Got Issues’  =),” said Dr. Phil, apparently using the opportunity to plug his new book.

“Me doing okay. Me would be doing better if me had some cookies!” wrote Elmo’s coworker Cookie Monster.

Out of thousands of responses, only one person on Earth seemed to be doing well: Chance the Rapper. “Honestly, I’m in a really good place rn,” he said.

Elmo later followed up with some words of kindness for all of Elmo’s followers. “Wow! Elmo is glad he asked!” Elmo wrote on Elmo’s X page. “Elmo learned that it is important to ask a friend how they are doing. Elmo will check in again soon, friends! Elmo loves you. #EmotionalWellBeing.”

The official Sesame Street account also posted a link to its mental health resources page. “Thank you, @Elmo, for checking in with a reminder for us to pause and take a mindful moment to focus on how we’re feeling.”
