Cheers cast returns to the bar on the 2023 Emmy Awards

Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name...

For the stars of Cheers, going where everybody knows their names isn't much of a challenge.

But if there's one place where it's a sure thing, that would be the Emmy Awards — and on Monday night, that's exactly where the cast returned, reuniting in a replica of the beloved Boston bar set, replete with a Fenway Park pennant on the wall.

Host Anthony Anderson introduced the reunion by calling Cheers "one of the greatest television shows of all time" and championing the 28 Emmys that the show won in its 11-season run.

Much of the cast, including Kelsey Grammer, Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, and John Ratzenberger, appeared on the stage, with Danson taking his spot behind the bar as trusty bartender Sam. "This feels nice to be here in front of you," Danson said, while Ratzenberger added that he would call it a "long overdue class reunion."

"Being together brings back some great memories of a show we're all very proud of," said Grammer before Perlman inquired as to the whereabouts of the envelope so they could present the award for Best Directing of a Comedy Series.

George Wendt, who played barstool fixture Norm, emerged from the wings, envelope in hand. He walked past a framed portrait of the late Kirstie Alley, who joined the show in season 6 and stayed with it through its conclusion.

The Cheers cast presented not only the award for comedy directing, but also the Emmy for Best Writing in a Comedy Series. Both awards went to teams from The Bear.

Perlman even got a shoutout from her husband, Danny DeVito, a bit later in the broadcast as he called out the four Emmys she won for her work on Cheers.

We raise a glass to this lovely reunion, even if we're not here for the Diane (Shelley Long) erasure.
