'San Junipero' writer wins Emmy for standout Black Mirror episode

Writer Charlie Brooker took home the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special, Sunday night for his juggernaut episode of Black Mirror, “San Junipero.”

“This is terrifying,” the actor demurred before thanking Netflix and “San Junipero” actors Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mackenzie Davis, and Denise Burse. “Owen [Harris] who did such a wonderful job directing San Junipero making me look much cleverer than I am.”

The series’ creator also shouted out his co-producer, who apparently doubted Brooker would win. “Annabelle, my co-show runner told me I wouldn’t win in a supportive psychologically healthy kind of way.”

“San Junipero” was a standout episode from Black Mirror‘s third season and it is also nominated for Outstanding TV Movie. The ’80s-esque episode centers on two women (played by Mbatha-Raw and Davis) who develop a powerful relationship in the digital afterlife.

“Thank you, I’m shocked,” Brooker finished. “I’m gonna go melt this down for currency.”

For the award, he beat out fellow writers Noah Hawley for Fargo, Ryan Murphy, Jaffe Cohen, and Michael Zam for Feud: Bette and Joan, Richard Price and Steven Zairian for The Night Of and David E. Kelley for Big Little Lies.
