Star Trek: Lower Decks puts opening scene online

Want to watch the opening scene of the first Star Trek comedy?

Above is the opening scene of Star Trek: Lower Decks, the new CBS All Access animated series exploring the lives of unsung hero crew members doing the more labor-oriented jobs on a starship, the U.S.S. Cerritos. The scene was released during the San Diego Comic-Con virtual panel on Thursday.

The show follows the adventures of Ensigns Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), and Tendi (Noël Wells) as they attempt to balance their busy work and personal lives while dealing with sci-fi anomalies.

“The big stories are happening in the bridge crew and there's more kind of social-emotional stories happening to the Lower Deckers," writer Mike McMahan said. "So it's like their job and the world they're in get affected by these sci-fi stories. But the funny thing too is that whatever menial job you have to do in Star Trek, it might be something that they do every day, but it's still sort of a fascinating look into stuff that happens onboard that haven't been highlighted in another series. So instead of being on the turbolift — the elevators in Trek — our guys are repairing the turbolift."
