FanDuel pays tribute to Carl Weathers in posthumous Super Bowl ad

The actor died Feb. 1 at age 76.

Online gambling company FanDuel paid homage to the late Carl Weathers in their Super Bowl ad featuring Rob Gronkowski.

The "Kick of Destiny" spot concludes with the actor nodding to the athlete as "thank you, Carl" flashes on the screen. The actor and former pro football player died peacefully in his sleep on Feb. 1 from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. He was 76.

FanDuel announced last week that the already-completed commercial would be adjusted out of respect for Weathers' family during their time of grief. "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Carl Weathers," the company said. "Throughout his life, Carl was an iconic talent who had a profound impact on the people he worked with on and off the screen.”

The company shared a sneak peak of the original spot last month that featured Gronkowski making his way toward Vegas to make things right after he infamously missed the “FanDuel kick of destiny” last year. Weathers then pulls up in a motorcycle with a sidecar and says, “This time, you won’t miss.” The two then speed through the desert together.

Weathers was best known for his roles in the Rocky film franchise and series The Mandalorian, among others. In a statement following his death, Weathers' family remembered him as “an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. They said, “Through his contributions to film, television, the arts, and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend."
