Jim Jarmusch zombie comedy The Dead Don't Die to open Cannes Film Festival

The 2019 Cannes Film Festival is popping a bottle of zombie-flavored “chardonaaay.”

Jim Jarmusch‘s upcoming horror-comedy hybrid The Dead Don’t Die will hold its world premiere screening as the annual cinema event’s opening night selection on May 14, a festival press release announced Wednesday.

The film — starring Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Adam Driver, Chloë Sevigny, Selena Gomez, and more — will also compete for the festival’s top prize: the prestigious Palme d’Or, which hasn’t gone to an American filmmaker since Terrence Malick earned the honor for his 2011 film The Tree of Life.

Written and directed by Jarmusch as his 13th fiction feature, The Dead Don’t Die follows a group of police officers (Driver, Sevigny, Murray) battling their way through a zombie infestation overtaking their small town (already inhabited by offbeat characters, like Swinton’s katana-wielding mortician) with talking corpses.

Jarmusch has a long history with the Cannes Film Festival, having won the Camera d’Or for Stranger Than Paradise in 1984 before screening other shorts (Coffee and Cigarettes: Somewhere in California) and features (Broken Flowers, Paterson) in later years.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu was previously announced as the 2019 jury president, and will preside over the festival’s competitive jury as they deliberate on which films from this year’s slate will win the event’s top awards.

Cannes will unveil its full 2019 competition lineup on April 18, while the full festival runs from May 14-25. Ahead of its June 14 theatrical bow, watch the trailer for The Dead Don’t Die above.
