Ricky Gervais Goes Wild

After a three-year Tina-and-Amy break, the HFPA brought back Ricky Gervais for his fourth turn as host of the Golden Globes. After tweeting in advance of the ceremony that he was going to "offend some humourless c---s," Gervais stepped up to the podium with a beer in hand and dove right in, taking aim at Caitlyn Jenner and Jeffrey Tambor, among others. "I want to do this monologue and go into hiding. Not even Sean Penn will stop me," he said, referring to the actor’s recent interview with Mexican drug lord El Chapo, who was recently arrested. "Snitch!"

Jonah Hill Moonlights as a... Bear

To present the first award of the night, Channing Tatum stepped onto the stage and introduced his co-presenter: Jonah Hill dressed as the bear that attacked Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in The Revenant. As the animal, Hill feigned modesty as he acknowledged he had done little press for the film, but took the opportunity to thank director Alejandro G. Iñárritu (and winner later in the night) for "taking a chance" on an unknown bear.

Rachel Bloom Gets "Crazy" Excited

The Globes love to recognize newcomers, and this year was no exception. Actress Rachel Bloom was visibly shocked — and thrilled — to accept the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Comedy or Musical for her performance in the CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Breathless, she quickly rattled off the names of everyone she wanted to thank, and recalled how difficult it was to find a network that would take on the quirky series. “We got six rejections in one day, and we felt like crap,” she said. But now? “There’s a musical comedy on network television right now, and I can’t believe I’m saying that.”

Matt Damon Laughs at Ben Affleck's Expense

Even Matt Damon couldn’t help but laugh. A close friend and collaborator to Ben Affleck for years, the actor failed to keep it together when host Ricky Gervais took the chance to poke a little fun at the recently divorced Gone Girl star and his relationship with his Good Will Hunting BFF. Brought onstage to present, Damon was introduced by Gervais as "only person Ben Affleck hasn’t been unfaithful to."

Mozart Makes It From the Jungle to the Stage

Mozart in the Jungle pulled out not one but two surprise wins, taking home the Best TV Comedy or Musical and the Best Actor in a TV Comedy or Musical for Gael Garcia Bernal's performance. The wins keep both categories in the Amazon family, as Transparent and Jeffrey Tambor respectively won in those categories last year. Mozart's unexpected wins come just after the show's second season premiered on Dec. 30, as the New York symphony returned to perform amidst contract disputes, brewing romance, and a return trip to maestro Rodrigo de Souza's home.

A Surprising Win for Winslet

In a charming moment of genuine surprise, Kate Winslet appeared truly shocked when it was announced that she won Best Supporting Actress for her work in Steve Jobs, beating out Jane Fonda, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Helen Mirren, and Alicia Vikander. “I really am actually extremely surprised and overwhelmed …. thank you so much to the Hollywood Foreign Press — Is this really happening?” she said in her acceptance speech. “What an incredible year for women in film… these categories are so crowded and crammed with skill and integrity.”

A Bleep-ing Good Time

It’s a good thing the awards air on a 20-second delay, as this year’s telecast had more than its fair share of bleeped-out profanity. Presenters Jaimie Alexander and Amber Heard ran into a bit of teleprompter trouble, which led to an awkward silence and Alexander asking, “Who types this s--t?” But she wasn’t alone. Among the other foul-mouthed presenters and winners were host Ricky Gervais, whose speech was fairly consistently bleeped throughout; Amy Schumer; Jonah Hill (pretending to be the bear from The Revenant); Alejandro G. Iñárritu; and Mel Gibson, in an exchange with Gervais.

Jamie Foxx Follows in Steve Harvey's Questionable Footsteps

Jamie Foxx made quite the topical joke in the midst of presenting at the Globes. Riffing off of Steve Harvey’s now-infamous flub at last month’s Miss Universe pageant, Foxx announced that the honor of Best Original Score went to Straight Outta Compton, despite the fact that the biopic wasn’t nominated. “I’m sorry folks, I made a mistake,” Foxx joked. “It’s right here on the card.” The card did, in fact, include the real winner: Ennio Morricone for The Hateful Eight.

America and Eva Get Seriously Funny

Too soon to laugh about it? America Ferrera and Eva Longoria presented together at the Globes and used the screentime to poke fun at those who confuse them for other Latina women in Hollywood. "Hi, I'm Eva Longoria, not Eva Mendes," Longoria deadpanned, while Ferrera joked, "I'm America Ferrera, not Gina Rodriguez." They went on to name-drop Rosario Dawson, Salma Hayek, and even Charo, making sure viewers remembered their names.

Sylvester Stallone Steals the Show

More than 40 years into his famed career, Sylvester Stallone finally won his first Golden Globe at Sunday’s ceremony. Previously nominated for 1976’s Rocky, the veteran star was rewarded by the HFPA for reprising his role of Rocky Balboa. Honored for Creed, Stallone won Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture and earned a standing ovation from his contemporaries. After thanking his collaborators and supporters, the star added, “Most of all, I want to thank my imaginary friend Rocky Balboa for being the best friend I’ve ever had.”

Aziz Ansari's Got Jokes

Aziz Ansari came prepared to the Globes. Nominated in the Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy category for his work in the critically acclaimed Netflix series Master of None, the comedian had a prop at the ready for the moment cameras panned to him. While the award actually went to Mozart in the Jungle star Gael García Bernal, Ansari hid his face by mock-reading a fake book titled Losing to Jeffrey Tambor With Dignity when his name was called.

Who Run the World?

Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer continued their BFF Tour at the Golden Globe Awards. Competing against one another in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, the hilarious stars took the stage together to present an award and make jokes about their friendship. “As women in Hollywood, people have a lot of preconceived notions about us,” Lawrence began. “Yeah, they’re just like, ‘Oh Jen, Amy, you’re so pretty, and everyone likes them, and wants to hang out with them,’” Schumer chimed in. “ ‘They seem so fun to be around, and ooh they should be models…’”

Ricky Gervais and Mel Gibson Play Nice

Among the myriad offensive remarks made by Ricky Gervais as host of the Golden Globes from 2010–2012 were some digs at Mel Gibson, so naturally, an interaction between the two men was worked into this year’s ceremony. Gervais pretended to make up for his past comments with the non-compliment that he’d rather have a drink with Gibson than Bill Cosby; Gibson responded that he’s always happy to see Gervais, “because it reminds me to get a colonoscopy.” Almost immediately after leaving Gibson alone onstage to present Mad Max: Fury Road, however, Gervais ran back out and asked Gibson an entirely bleeped-out question, which appeared to be “what the f--- does sugar t--s even mean?” referring to the time Gibson addressed a female police officer by that unfortunate nickname.

Remember the Name

Tom Hanks graced the Globes stage with his presence to pay tribute to none other than his Philadelphia costar Denzel Washington. Following in the famed footsteps of Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, Harrison Ford, and Robert De Niro, Washington was honored with the Globes’ Cecil B. DeMille Award. Introducing a stunning montage of the actor’s acclaimed filmography, Hanks said simply, “If Washington doesn’t ring out loud enough then let the first name carry all the weight. And that name is: Denzel.”

Cookies From Cookie

Taraji P. Henson stunned as only she could when it was announced that she nabbed the Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama for her role as Cookie Lyon in Empire. She paid tribute to her character by handing out cookies to the famous faces in the audience en route to the stage, and shouted “Get off my train!” to a stagehand who made the mistake of treading on her stunning white gown. “Who knew that playing an ex-convict would take me all around the globe?” she questioned, before responding to a suggestion to hurry it up by saying simply, “I waited 20 years for this, you’re gonna wait.”

The Big Winners

The night’s top honors went to two simply named films: The Revenant and The Martian. Starring Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama winner Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant beat out Carol, Mad Max: Fury Road, Room, and Spotlight to win Best Motion Picture — Drama. On the Musical or Comedy side, the Matt Damon-starring Martian edged out The Big Short, Joy, Spy, and Trainwreck.
