Ray Liotta played real-life mobster Henry Hill, an associate of the Lucchese crime family. Hill starts the film off narrating, "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster." Unfortunately, after decades of the gangster life, he gets arrested and strikes up a deal that puts him in the Witness Protection Program: "I get to live the rest of my life like a schnook."

After Goodfellas, Liotta starred in Unlawful Entry (1992), reunited with Robert De Niro in Cop Land (1997), portrayed Frank Sinatra in the TV movie The Rat Pack, and played Johnny Depp's father in Blow (2001). He also had a hodgepodge of appearances in Date Night (2010), Muppets Most Wanted (2014), an episode of The League, and a David Guetta music video.

Liotta led the History Channel miniseries Texas Rising, narrated the series The Making of the Mob: New York, and costarred with Jennifer Lopez on the NBC cop drama Shades of Blue for three seasons. Returning to the mobster movie genre, Liotta played twin Moltisanti brothers in The Many Saints of Newark, a 2021 prequel to The Sopranos.

He died at the age of 67 in May 2022 in the Dominican Republic where he was working on a film. His final TV project, the Apple TV+ series Black Bird, was released in July 2022. He also appears in the 2023 comedy-thriller Cocaine Bear.

Robert De Niro, then already a two-time Academy Award winner, played Jimmy Conway, based on real-life gangster Jimmy Burke. He masterminds the infamous Lufthansa theft, but, a few years later, gets arrested when Henry Hill becomes an FBI informant.

De Niro and director Martin Scorsese continued with their collaborations in Cape Fear (1991) and Casino (1995). After a history of Mob roles, De Niro ventured into comedy, most notably with the Meet the Parents films, Dirty Grandpa (2016), and a string of guest appearances on Saturday Night Live as Robert Mueller.

In 2019, the actor appeared in Joker, and teamed up with Joe Pesci and Al Pacino to lead Scorsese's The Irishman, both of which earned Best Picture nominations. He joins another Scorsese regular, Leonardo DiCaprio, for the director's 2023 film Killers of the Flower Moon, and will reunite with the writer of Goodfellas for Wise Guys—this time playing two crime bosses from feuding families.

In 1999, Pesci announced his retirement from acting, but returned for a cameo in the De Niro-directed film The Good Shepherd (2006) and later starred in Love Ranch in 2010 and The Irishman. He also costars on Pete Davidson's Peacock comedy series Bupkis as Davidson's grandfather.
