Kumail Nanjiani reacts to Golden Globes snub with 'Steven Spielberg' tweet

It's a meme now.

The Big Sick might not have any Golden Globe nominations, but it has the support of one of America’s foremost directors… sort of.

Following the Hollywood Foreign Press Association giving the cold shoulder to the Sundance breakout, writer-star Kumail Nanjiani took matters into his own hands, graciously handling Monday morning’s snub with a playful tweet in support of the project.

“Hey gang. This is Steven Spielberg tweeting from Kumail’s phone,” the tweet reads. “My fave movie this yr was The Big Sick. It’s avail on Amazon Prime & iTunes & all that. Great movie to watch w the fam. I watched it w my family (the Spielbergs) & we all loved it. Handing phone back to Kumail now.”

Nanjiani’s tweet had reached burgeoning meme status shortly after he posted.

Nanjiani continued the supposed prank after news outlets reported on the tweets.

“Steven Spielberg tweeted that!” he wrote in response to a Deadline article. “I’ll give the phone back to him. This is Steven (Spielberg.) I tweeted that. I directed Jaws, ET, BFG. See? I can name 3 of my films. It has to be me. Lincoln. That’s 4. That’s enough proof for you to retract.”

After generating stellar reviews out of Sundance and making big strides at the summer box office, The Big Sick — a romantic comedy adapted from Nanjiani’s real-life culture clash with the family of his wife (and co-writer) Emily V. Gordon –was touted as a potential Oscar contender, though its Globes shutout marks a stumble en route to the Jan. 23 Academy Award nominations.

In the run-up to the Golden Globe nominations, The Big Sick amassed high profile notices from key precursors groups, including a best picture nomination from the Critics Choice Awards and a spot on the American Film Institute’s top 10 films of the year. Holly Hunter’s supporting performance has also bagged several nominations on the awards circuit thus far, namely at the Film Independent Spirit Awards and the Critics Choice Awards.
