Just call Aziz Ansari, the Master of Awards (even if he isn’t a huge fan of award shows).

On Sunday night in Los Angeles, the Master of None star won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.

“I genuinely didn’t think I would win because all the websites said I was going to lose,” Ansari started his speech. “The only reason my acting is good in that show is because everyone else holds me up the whole time.”

On the Netflix original series, Ansari not only stars as Dev Shah, the pasta-loving, cupcake show host, but also plays the role of auteur, as he serves as co-creator, writer, and director.

In his A review, EW’s Jeff Jensen wrote of the sophomore season: “A bittersweet valentine, a timely fable about cultural character, Master of None is rich entertainment powered by Ansari’s increasing mastery of his art, his artistic hunger, and the wisdom and skill of his collaborators.”

Ansari’s victory came over Black-ish‘s Anthony Anderson, I Love Dick‘s Kevin Bacon, Shameless‘ William H. Macy, and Will & Grace‘s Eric McCormack.
